Extract of book “Education for faith based intelligence and community life”part II Man and Self. The Self as Organizing Principle:

Dear Believers, the great Swiss scientist Piaget described the first awareness of the child as an immediate awareness with no focus in time or place, nor as a distinct and separate being even with a physical awareness of itself. This experience of disembodied awareness can only be termed spiritual. The child who plays with its feet, hands and toes, learning to manipulate things is learning the conscious awareness and functions of its body and mind. As self-awareness grows the child learns to respond intuitively to instinctive and emotional experience and to give direction thru self-awareness. As the child learns to label emotional experience as good or bad, self-awareness becomes the organizer and tool for developing intuitive impressions and expressions of reality.

The great scientist of the mind, Sigmund Freud, identified the functions of self-awareness in the misconstrued logic of id, ego and superego. Self crystallizes and organizes experience, establishes conscious awareness, focuses our perception of reality, motivates, determines our disposition and attitudes and chooses how we meet our entire need thru self-direction. Self is the focus we develop to organize and express our individual human potential, and to make sense of the world around us. Self-awareness gives us a conscious focus like a bright spotlight, which shines in the very dark space of un conscious reality. Our understanding of that vast reality depends on self-understanding, the subjective experience that personalizes our perception of reality, and focuses the light of intuitive and intelligent thinking just as we point a powerful spotlight to see and to act purposefully with our own eyes. If we imagine reality as the dark space of the universe and everything in it, then we begin to understand how self-awareness is a very small reality. In psychology and philosophy this description of the beginning of individual self-awareness is called The Theory of Mind. The picture of self determines our individual identity or who we are, gives direction to behavior and personality, our human capabilities, social lifen civilized behavior, established life, and our destiny under the will of God.

THE FIRST SELF-NAFS AL-AMMARA

53”Nor do I absolve my own self (of blame) the(human soul) is certainly prone to evil unless my Lord do bestow His Mercy: but surely certainly my Lord is Off-Forgiving Most Merciful.” S.12, A.53.

Dear believers, the first sense of self, Al-ammara, develops from the spiritual potential of the soul. The Nafs Al-Ammara is based in instinctive feelings feeding on the world of concrete reality. The world of tangible reality crystallizes first from instinctive awareness of the need to feed life physically, emotionally, and mentally. Reality is first perceived and expressed thru instinctive awareness that registers as what we feel, what we see and what we cannot see.Al-Ammara is a feeling based consciousness of our spirit as a separate experience and existence that crystallizes a self- centered awareness of instinctive feeling, I am what I created in the best of molds (fee taqweem). If we experience reality in extremes we may feel and think that if something is good then more of it is good and all of it is ultimate good. This tendency toward extremes of uninformed and exaggerated spiritual and emotional need makes this aspect of the self ”prone to evil”.

Imam W.D Mohammed says the nafs Al-Ammara is impetuous, impulsive, and wants to have its way. This first spirit is impatient, demanding, ego centered, selfish, hungry, full of appetites for everything in the world and wants its satisfaction now. “If this spirit is fed by extreme influences it becomes the biggest spirit and wants everything and anything we may wish for with no restraint. The old people used to say, you just want that because you see it, as if to say using our eyes, feeling and other senses or our emotional spirit are not sufficient to define our need in reality. As emotional awareness develops the influences and expressions of the self become focused in attitudes, dispositions, and habits. We call some of these influences which form emotional/intuitive behaviors and common sense : self-esteem, self-confidence, dispositions, attitudes, and feelings. These qualities provide a basic kind of emotionally ”programmed” subconscious awareness out of which our spirit reacts ”automatically” to the natural and social world around us without necessity of thinking.
