South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem plans to send National Guard troops to the U.S. southern border in response to a request from the governors of Texas and Arizona.
Noem, a Republican, made the announcement on Twitter on Monday. She becomes the latest GOP governor to pledge assistance after Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey invoked the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) on June 10.
"Tomorrow morning I'm officially announcing up to 50 National Guard troops to Texas to help secure our border," Noem wrote. "The Biden Administration has failed to keep America safe. We shouldn't be making our own communities vulnerable by sending police to fix Biden's border crisis."
Noem didn't provide further details about the deployment on Monday.
Abbott and Ducey wrote to the nation's other governors on June 10 requesting help in dealing with problems at the U.S.-Mexico border. The governors, both Republicans, said that Texas and Arizona were now "ground zero," but that the effects would be felt in other states, citing human trafficking and the spread of fentanyl.
"Given the staggering number of violations now occurring in Texas and Arizona, additional manpower is needed from any state that can spare it," the governors wrote.
"With your help, we can apprehend more of these perpetrators of state and federal crimes, before they can cause problems in your state."
Several Republican governors have responded to the letter and pledged assistance. In addition to Noem, help has been promised by Ron DeSantis of Florida, Kim Reynolds of Iowa and Pete Ricketts of Nebraska.
DeSantis said he planned to send 50 law enforcement officers to Texas with their duties to begin on Monday, but didn't offer details about where they would be operating.
"America's border security crisis impacts every state and every American," DeSantis said in a statement on June 16. "The Biden Administration ended policies implemented by President Trump that were curbing illegal immigration, securing our border, and keeping Americans safe."
"Governors Abbott and Ducey recently sent out a call for help to every state in the nation, needing additional law enforcement manpower and other resources to aid with border security. I'm proud to announce today that the state of Florida is answering the call. Florida has your back," he said.
As Abbott and Ducey invoked EMAC, it means that law enforcement officers from other states will have the same duties and powers as the local authorities when they operate in Texas and Arizona, according to The Argus Leader.
